『腰まで泥まみれ』

来週末ライブをさせてもらう『音ノ杜』さんのブログをきっかけに、ピートシガーの『腰まで泥まみれ』の原曲の詞を探してみた。
４５年も前に聴いて、歌詞を探して（どうやって見つけたのか覚えていないが・・・）いい加減に直訳して唄っていたのを思い出す・・・。

僕は、隊長が死んだところ（With the captain dead and gone）を、ぼかしたニュアンスで唄っていた。
なんとなく情景が浮かんでくるような歌詞にしたんだと思う。

英語が苦手な僕は、かなりいい加減な訳し方をしていたように思う。
なにしろ、英和辞典で単語をしらべて並べただけだったから・・・＾＾；

その後、中川五郎さんがきちんとした詞にまとめたものが音楽誌に載り、彼の訳詞ということになったのだが・・・ちょっぴり悔しいけど、僕自身も彼の詞で歌っている部分が何箇所かある・・・。

元々僕が訳した詞がどんなだったか、正確に残っていないので残念だけど、１・２・３番目の歌詞はほとんど僕の訳したものだ。

１５日の『音ノ杜ライブ』では、できるだけ僕の訳に近い歌詞で唄おうと思う・・・。

Was all that floated by.

And we just made it out of the Big Muddy
With the captain dead and gone.

We stripped and dived and found his body
Stuck in the old quicksand.
I guess he didn't know that the water was deeper
Than the place he'd once before been.
Another stream had joined the Big Muddy

We were lucky to escape from the Big Muddy
